From the Teacher's Desk: Math and Art
Math and art are subject areas that are often taught separately, however, there are many connections between the two. Integration helps students to understand many key concepts by increasing interest and engagement. Through the experiences of creating individual and group artwork, students develop a greater understanding of math concepts. The static structure of math concepts and the spontaneous freedom of creating art provide a perfect combination for a fun and informative learning environment.
There are many resources, projects, and websites that explain the relationship between art and math and incorporate these connections into student learning.
Here are a few:
- coolmath4kids.com - presents tessellations, polyhedra, and fractals in kid-friendly language
- Math and the Art of M. C. Escher - examines Escher’s collection of art, which includes almost every almost every mathematical concept that you can think of
Students enjoy paper folding activities such as making paper airplanes and origami. These are both excellent ways to learn key geometry concepts. Mandala creation is another student favourite. Key math concepts are geometric modeling, radial design, the properties of circles, and symmetry.
If you are looking for something very simple for younger students, check out these colouring pages. This is a perfect way to help review and consolidate math facts.
Lastly, here's a fun math/art game that kids love. It's called THE MISSING MIDDLE. Students create and decorate puzzles (templates included). They learn about geometry and area while performing a magic trick! |

C-Thru Ruler
Did you know?
C-Thru ruler is a pioneer in the manufacturing of transparent plastic rulers designed by schoolteacher Jennie Zachs in 1939. Jennie saw the need for transparent measuring tools such as rulers, triangles, curves and protractors in the classroom.
In June 2012, the non-scrapbooking part of the business was sold to Acme United Corporation and C-Thru has become part of the Westcott product family, which mainly consists of rulers, scissors and other school and office products. |
