From the Teacher's Desk: Better Book Reports
Make book reports more interesting to prepare and more fun to present with these ten ideas.
Ten Ways to Reinvent the Book Report
- Make a Poster
Design a poster about the Main Character in your book. Create a picture and add text that describes the physical attributes and personality traits of this character.
- Design a CD Cover
Your cover will include a plot summary and an illustration or photo. Include some song titles that would be appropriate for the book.
- Create a Movie Poster
Your poster should include the name of the book (movie) and a cast list of the movie stars that will play the characters in your story. Your text should include some highlights of the plot so you can convince your class-mates that this would be movie worth seeing.
- Award Show
Create some trophies and awards to present in honour of your book. Here are some ideas: Most Interesting Character, Best Action in the Book, Funniest Part in the Book, Best Descriptive Paragraph, Best Illustration, Biggest Surprise, etc.
- Character Mask
Create a mask to depict a character from your book. Wear this mask while you present facts about the character's actions and personality.
- Postcard/Letter
Pretend to be one of the characters in your book and send a postcard/letter from that character to your teacher. Include a summary of the story in your message.
- Puppet Show
Create puppets to present a summary of your story. This is a fun way to make the plot of your book come alive for your class-mates.
- Tissue Box
Decorate your box and then illustrate four scenes from your book and place one scene on each side of the tissue box. Present your tissue box to the class while you explain the story.
- Character Can
Decorate an empty coffee can to look like a character from your book. Fill the can with several pieces of paper that contain a sentence about your character.
- Location, Location, Location
Use your art supplies and or building blocks to create a 3D version of the setting of your book. Shoe-box dioramas, clay models, and Lego creations are all fun projects that allow you to describe the setting of your story.

Classroom Activity: My Favorite Book
Students share their favorite books and inspire classmates to read with these heartfelt mobile book reports.
Step 1
Trim each white square to form a heart.
Step 2
Write your name on the small heart, the book's main character's name on a medium-size heart, the setting on the other medium-size heart, and a brief summary on the large heart.
Step 3
Glue each heart to the construction paper square that is slightly larger than it. Trim the square to form a border.
Step 4
Trim the white rectangle to form an arrow. Write why you like the book on the arrow. Glue it to the construction paper rectangle and trim to form a border.
Step 5
Fold the tagboard strip in half lengthwise. Write the book's title and author's name on it and add an illustration.
Step 6
Hole-punch the pieces and tie them together with pieces of yarn. Tie another piece of yarn to the top of the tagboard as a hanger.
