From the Teacher's Desk: Terry Fox Lesson Plans
After thirty-five years, the legacy of Terry Fox remains in the hearts of Canadians, as well as people all over the world. The classroom is the perfect setting to teach students about this true Canadian hero and The Terry Fox Foundation is an excellent bilingual resource for teachers.
The Terry Fox Foundation site contains lesson plans for students from Kindergarten to Grade Eight. The lessons have been designed and written by teachers and are therefore based on curriculum expectations. The lesson plans include background information, activities, school videos and reproducible Black Line Masters. The lessons include ideas about how to talk to students about Cancer and how to encourage them to make healthy lifestyle choices. There are lessons about Terry’s life and his dream to run the Marathon of Hope. Students can also learn about fundraising and Cancer research.
Hero vs. Superhero
A fun lesson for Primary students is called Hero vs. Superhero. Older students examine newspaper stories about Terry and learn the elements of a newspaper article. Students can also learn about media campaigns and how to create social change through educating and inspiring the world around them. Also included, in this site, is a Teachers’ Guide to the novel Run. Run is a novel written by Eric Walters. It’s a fictional story based on the true-life story of Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope. The main character is a troubled thirteen-year-old boy, living in Toronto, who has the opportunity to befriend Terry Fox. This book is a favourite with Junior and Intermediate students. It can be shared with the class as a read-aloud or completed as a novel study.
