Nutrition in the classroom

From the Teacher's Desk: Nutrition in the classroom

It's important for students to develop an understanding of how nutrition plays a role in their daily lives. It is necessary for them to have knowledge of the basic food groups, the nutritional value of the food they eat, and how their bodies digest and use food.

Health Canada allows you to download copies of Canada's Food Guide. You can also fill out an online order form to receive print copies. The Food Guides are available in French, as well as nine other languages. Teachers can use the Educational Tool Kit to teach students about the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. Students can also create their own personalized food guides with the My Food Guide interactive tool.

The Dairy Education Program has student activities, booklets, posters, work sheets, and recipes. These resources are available to download in English and French. Teachers can also book a free 45 minute classroom presentation.

Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc provides a wide variety of resource material and information for educators as well as videos.

Egg Farmers of Canada has teaching materials, activity workbooks, etc. that can be downloaded, ordered online, or ordered directly though the provincial egg producer organization. Orders for Ontario | Orders for Quebec

Salad Bar Day

A fun culminating activity for a Nutrition Unit is to enjoy a class Salad Bar Day. Each student prepares a different salad ingredient or dressing. All of the Salad Bar contributions are set out for all to enjoy. This is the perfect opportunity to reinforce the fact that healthy food tastes good. Mmmmmmm!

An Apple a Day - Food Journal

Build and talk about healthy eating habits with this apple-shaped diary.

After students track the foods they eat for a school week, have them graph the foods by food group.

Use the diaries to discuss where food comes from, how we can eat more locally produced food and why that is important.
