From the Teacher's Desk: Poetry in the Classroom
Poetry is Art. There are many ways to use poetry in the classroom. A poem-a-day is a fun way to introduce poetry to your students. Students can discover the styles of different poets, a variety of poetic forms, and how to use poetic vocabulary.
Students can work individually, in partners, or in groups to share and compare poems. It's interesting to build a classroom anthology by collecting poems of a variety of themes and forms written by a variety of poets. For older students, there is an online PDF called Canadian Poet A Day. This resource includes six lesson plans and student activity sheets. The plan works with the National Film Board films about prominent Canadian poets such as Irving Layton, Leonard Cohen and P.K. Page to mention a few.

Bring poetry to life
Choral dramatization is an excellent way to bring poetry to life. Poems can be read aloud by varying the pitch (whisper, shout) and speed. Poems can be read in a rhythmic manner by clapping, stomping etc. Echo Reading, Alternate Line Reading, and Round Reading are also very good ways to reinforce the rhythm and pattern of poetry.
Students also enjoy responding to poetry with oral and written responses. They can extend their understanding of a poem by raising questions, pattern writing, illustrating, and re-telling the poem.
An excellent resource is a book called The Poetry Experience--Choosing and Using Poetry in the Classroom by Sheree Fitch and Larry Swartz.
Have fun with this one:
