From the Teacher's Desk: Teaching Students About Money
Are you looking for some out-of-the-box methods to teach the value of money to your students? Once students understand the concepts of how to add and subtract money and how to make change, they are ready to learn the importance of entrepreneurship.
Caine’s Arcade
One of the best ways to inspire students is to introduce them to the website and video of Caine’s Arcade: In 2011, a then nine-year old boy named Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building a cardboard arcade in his dad's auto parts store in East Los Angeles. He worked on his arcade games all summer long and he created elaborate displays, security systems, prizes, etc.
The only thing that Caine needed was customers. On the last day of summer, a man named Nirvan Mullick walked into Caine's dad's shop and he became Caine's first and only customer. He loved Caine’s Arcade. Since Nirvan was a filmmaker, he decided to make short film about Caine's Arcade. He also decided to organize a surprise flash mob of customers to come and play the arcade games. Caine’s response is priceless!!!

Your students will be inspired to design and create their own arcade games and to set up a classroom arcade. Ticket sales are an excellent way to practice handling money. |

Lemonade Stand, Peter Pig and Money Metropolis
The Lemonade Stand Millionaire
An excellent Canadian resource is a book/website entitled The Lemonade Stand Millionaire. Local author and speaker, Gail Haynes, introduces many ways for students to develop financial literacy and financial responsibility.
Practical Money Skills
There are many online games for students to use to develop money skills. Several games can be found at Practical Money Skills.
Youngers students will enjoy Peter Pig’s Money Counter. Peter Pig will help them to sort and count coins. Older students will enjoy playing Money Metropolis. This is a fast-paced video game that allows students to navigate a virtual world, making financial decisions that will cause their simulated bank account to shrink or grow.
These suggestions will help your students to practise their fundamental money skills, while developing a keen business sense.
