Pumpkin Math
Students love pumpkins and pumpkin math ideas are unlimited.
Students can:
- weigh and measure pumpkins
- count and sort seeds
- explore shape, size, and symmetry
- create glyphs and graphs
Mathwire is an excellent resource that contains several idea and links. This site also includes many Math & Literature connections. Picture books are very effective tools. They help to create interest, stimulate group discussion, and tie in problem-solving ideas.

Pumpkin Art
Pumpkins also provide inspiration for Art lessons. Pumpkins can be painted, carved, and decorated. Hands On as We Grow lists several artistic ways to be creative with pumpkins. You will find instructions and photos for several art projects such as Pumpkin Printmaking, Play Dough Pumpkins, Pumpkin Boats, and Pumpkin Luminaries.

Teach safety and science!
Fire Safety Lessons are also a timely addition this time of year
Sparky.org is a kid-friendly site that includes activities, cartoons, and drawing lessons. Teachers can download escape plan grids and home safety checklists.
Firefacts.org includes a Teacher Resource section. Here, you will discover fun and creative games and activities, quizzes and tests, and free printable colouring sheets and activity pages. Students can also learn about the "Science of Fire". Do you know that all fires require three elements (oxygen, heat, and fuel)? This is known as the "Fire Triangle". If the correct amount of each element is present, and a chemical reaction occurs, a fire will start.
